Nourishing Medicine,
Rooted in Japan

Connecting food, medicine, and culture to nourish body and mind.

Nourishing MED Japan is a general incorporated association dedicated to making “Food Medicine” — a preventive approach to health grounded in medical evidence — accessible and practical in everyday life. Rooted in scientific and medical knowledge, we seek to preserve and carry forward Japan’s rich food culture, traditional wisdom, and sense of beauty, connecting them to future generations while fostering holistic well-being through daily living.

ABOUT US

Food is Medicine,
Food is Culture.

Nourishing MED Japan is a physician-led general incorporated association dedicated to bridging the gap between food and medicine and bringing Food Medicine into society as a practical form of preventive healthcare.

“Nourishing” means more than simply providing nourishment for the body and mind. It also reflects our commitment to cherishing and cultivating the richness of our lives, traditions, and culture. Through Food as Medicine, we envision healthcare that extends beyond treating illness—supporting people in nourishing their bodies and minds, finding fulfillment, and living healthier, more meaningful lives.

We view food not merely as a means of nutrition or health management, but as a foundation for well-being that shapes daily life, preserves cultural heritage, and fosters connections among people, communities, and nature. Through this perspective, we continue to explore and promote a more holistic approach to health and medicine.

MISSION / VISSION

Three Pillars
of Culinary Medicine

For us, Food Medicine is more than simply sharing knowledge and information about healthy eating.

It is an approach to healthcare that can be practiced naturally in everyday life, sustained over time, and passed on to future generations. We see it as a foundation for well-being that empowers people to cultivate health through their daily choices and way of living.

At Nourishing MED Japan, our work is guided by three core pillars that bring this vision into practice.

01

Food as the Foundation of Health and Well-Being

We view food as far more than a means of nourishment.

It plays a vital role in disease prevention, recovery, self-care, and in fostering meaningful connections between people, communities, and the natural world. We believe that food serves as a fundamental foundation for health, well-being, and a more holistic approach to healthcare.

02

The Culinary Medicine Approach

Culinary Medicine is a practical, evidence-based approach that goes beyond simply providing knowledge about food and nutrition. It empowers people to prepare healthy meals themselves and to incorporate sustainable eating habits into their daily lives.

03

From Japanese Food Culture to Modern Food Medicine

Japanese food culture is deeply rooted in wisdom that supports health and well-being.

We reinterpret and reframe this wisdom in a way that fits contemporary lifestyles, and through Food Medicine, we share it with society while passing it on to future generations.

Activities / Projects

Nourishing MED Japan works across education, research, cultural heritage, creative expression, communication, and social implementation, engaging in cross-disciplinary activities that transcend boundaries.

Current
Learning
We plan and host lectures, seminars, symposiums, workshops, and dialogue sessions on Food Medicine, Preventive Medicine, and Culinary Medicine. Rather than ending with knowledge alone, we aim to help participants bring what they learn back into their daily lives, fostering opportunities for meaningful, practical application in everyday living.
Planned
Research Collaboration
Through collaboration with universities, research institutions, and healthcare professionals, we advance knowledge on diet quality, self-efficacy, well-being, and lifestyle disease–related indicators, translating these findings into practical applications rooted in everyday life.

By integrating scientific research with the wisdom and practices embedded in Japan’s food culture, we aim to build a foundation for Food Medicine as an open, evidence-based discipline that contributes to society.
Projects / Gastronomy & Food Culture
Starting with Japanese food culture, we envision and develop culturally rooted programs that support community food education, workplace well-being initiatives, and practical applications for everyday life.

By reexamining Japanese home cooking, fermentation traditions, seasonal eating, and regional wisdom as cultural practices deeply connected to local landscapes, history, and daily life, we seek to bring their richness into the present. Through this work, we create opportunities for these traditions to be preserved, passed on, and actively practiced within contemporary living.
Expression, Design & Communication
Through video, writing, design, and creative projects, we share knowledge and practices surrounding food, health, culture, and everyday life.

While valuing expressions that convey the aesthetics, stories, and memories of place behind food, we seek to communicate the connection between food, physical and mental well-being, and a richer way of living to society.
